The back up goalkeeper limped off during Argentina’s humiliation against Spain.
Romero came off after just 22 minutes of the 6-1 defeat – having already conceded Diego Costa’s opener.
A small statement on the Manchester United website read: “There is concern over Sergio Romero’s injury as he was forced off 22 minutes into the game in Spain.
“The United keeper was hurt in a Kjøp Monaco Fotballdrakt collision with Diego Costa, when the Atletico Madrid striker scored his goal, and was replaced by Chelsea’s Willy Caballero.”
Romero, 31, has been back up for David de Gea this season and has played in two Champions League games and another seven cup matches this term.
United have not used a third goalkeeper but may be forced to have one on the bench this weekend when they face Swansea at Old Trafford ahead of the Manchester derby the following week.
With Sam Johnstone on loan at Aston Villa Portuguese youngster Joel Pereira could be given the nod.
Pereira has made three appearances for United making his debut in the FA Cup against Wigan last year – replacing Romero for the final 10 minutes in Kjøp Napoli Fotballdrakt the fourth round in the 4-0 win.
Elsewhere United players had mixed fortunes with Marcos Rojo on the end of the 6-1 thrashing from De Gea’s Spain.
Victor Lindelof and Marouane Fellaini missed their respective matches as did Matteo Darmian.
Jesse Lingard scored in England’s win over Holland and set up Jamie Vardy’s goal against Italy.
Romeu Lukaku scored a double for Belgium against Saudi Arabia.
